The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that two Muslim police officers in New Jersey cannot be barred from wearing beards. The court, acting without comment on Monday, rejected an appeal by Newark city officials and left intact rulings that such a ban would violate the officers’ freedom of religion. Jewish groups that have been promoting legislation to increase religious freedom in the workplace, including the private sector, hailed the court’s move.
