The umbrella body for U.S. Jewish public policy groups is joining a movement that calls for increased investment in infrastructure. Transportation for America, launched Wednesday, “will call on the next President and Congress to move us out of economic peril by investing in a transportation system that creates jobs, saves Americans money and reduces our oil dependence,” a statement said. The Jewish Council for Public Affairs is a founding member. Such a job-creating investment is a central plank of the platform of the presidential campaign of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), and most of the speakers on a conference call Tuesday announcing the launch were Democrats, including Gov. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania, who is Jewish.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is among a number of Republicans also backing the initiative.
