The United Nations called on Lebanon to assert its full control over the southern portion of the country. Rolf Knutsson, the new U.N. envoy for southern Lebanon, said such a move would provide a peaceful environment following Israel’s withdrawal from the region in May. Since then, the Lebanese army has avoided taking up positions along the border, which remains controlled by Hezbollah gunmen.
