The United States and Egypt froze efforts to mediate peace talks between Israel and Syria, according to Israeli sources quoted in the Israeli daily Ha’aretz. The paper said Egypt decided to stop its mediation efforts after Syrian President Hafez Assad met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak earlier this month and indicated he would not soften any of his demands.
