The United States “finally bowed down to pressure from the European Union” when it waived sanctions against three foreign countries doing business in Iran, the official Iranian news agency said. Meanwhile, a communique from the Tehran government called on the United States to repeal a 1996 law that calls for punitive trade measures against companies investing in Iran’s oil sector. The law is intended to deter Tehran’s efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction and promote terrorism. Some American Jewish groups criticized the Clinton administration for waiving the sanctions.
