The United States should emulate Germany and reach out to blacks as the Germans have reached out and acknowledged their crimes against Jews, a New York congressman said. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) spoke Monday after attending an event at which President Bush announced additional aid to Africa. Rangel praised such efforts, as well as plans for a congressional apology to African Americans for lynchings committed years ago. “Not too long ago I was in Germany, and I was struck by the German leadership in being so proud of all that they were doing for Israel,” Rangel said. “I could not help but believe how much improved the relationship between blacks and whites could be in this country if there was a sincere effort not to avoid the atrocities that were taken place, but to say it was done, and we’re going to make up for it in education and in health care, and get on with it.”
