The United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israeli actions in Gaza. Though a harsher, initial version had been amended to call for the release of an abducted Israeli soldier and an end to Palestinian rocket fire on Israel, the resolution vetoed Thursday still demanded that Israel halt its military retaliation.
