The unusually long weekend claimed the lives of nine people, with 19 seriously injured and 14 slightly hurt in traffic accidents. Israel’s weekend included the usually Friday-Saturday, but many “bridged” their holiday over to Monday, Succoth. The country’s roads were jammed with vacationers, many of them taking long trips to the Sinai and the Rafah salient–perhaps the last such Succoth trip for a long time. But holiday fun involved 133 traffic accidents. The nine fatalities were a record, equal to the average week’s rate. The accidents were partly caused by the slippery roads, following a night of the first early winter showers.
