The veteran Communist leader, Shmuel Mikunis, who represented Maki in the Knesset since 1949, has decided to leave his party. Last year he resigned from his post as secretary general of Maki, a position he held since the party was founded, Mikunis said his decision to leave the party was due to the move by Maki to adopt a more pro-Zionist platform in anticipation of its merger with Moked which is headed by Knesseter Meir Payil. Maki, unlike Rakah, the pro-Soviet Israeli Communist Party, has had strong differences with Moscow over the years.
