The White House asked top administration officials to recommend by Jan. 11 whether President Clinton should reduce the life sentence of an American convicted of spying for Israel. In a letter sent last month to Attorney General Janet Reno, Secretary of Defense William Cohen, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and CIA Director George Tenet, the White House said the deadline would allow the president to conduct a review of Jonathan Pollard’s case in a “timely manner.” During the Wye peace talks in October, Clinton promised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu he would review Pollard’s case.
