A British military communique declared today that an Italian air raid on the Palestinian port of Haifa–third in the past month–proved ineffectual.
A number of bombs were dropped, the majority falling harmlessly in the sea or on waste ground, the communique said. None fell on Haifa itself. There were no military casualties and fewer than ten civilian casualties, it was stated. Anti-aircraft artillery fired heavily on the raiders, the communique said.
(An Italian communique issued in Rome claimed gasoline storage tanks were set afire and port facilities damaged in the raid. The Italians said all the planes returned safely.)
The first raid on Haifa occurred July 15. The second, on July 24, killed 46 persons and wounded 88, and caused some damage.
