More than one-third of the heads of Jewish families in Los Angeles work in some capacity as proprietors and managers of businesses, although a roughly comparable figure for the entire population of the city would show only about one-eighth of the total in this field.
According to a survey recently conducted by the Los Angeles Jewish community, the proportion of Jewish heads of families in the professions is about 15 percent, or only slightly higher than the proportion in the general population. A little more than one-fifth of the principal wage earners in Jewish homes make their living as craftsmen and skilled or unskilled workers. The proportion in this category in the general population is about twice as large.
The survey disclosed that about 80 out of every 100 Jewish men in Los Angeles are employed, with less than two percent unemployed and seeking work and eight percent retired. About one in four of the women work, with the largest proportion in the clerical or sales fields. More than a third of the principal Jewish wage earners are in the wholesale or retail industries and a fifth are in manufacturing.
