Thirteen leaders of Palestine Jewry chosen from more than 100 volunteers today began a hunger strike in sympathy with the more than 1,000 Palestine-bound Jewish refugees detained on the “Fede” in the Italian port of La Spezia.
Prior to starting the strike, the thirteen were given a medical examination. The committee which selected the volunteers did not allow members of the Jewish Agency executive to participate. Isaac Ben-Zvi, president of the Jewish National Council, was also excluded from the list of those who wanted to join the strike.
