Two mass rallies, one in Brooklyn, the other in suburban Long Island, were held here today as thousands demonstrated against Soviet Russia’s “inhuman treatment” of the 3, 000, 000 Jews in the USSR.
In Brooklyn, residents representing more than 1, 000 Brooklyn Jewish organizations, gathered in front of the steps of Borough Hall for the demonstration. Brooklyn Borough President Abe Stark had proclaimed today as “Protest Against Soviet Anti-Semitism Day. ” Judge Edward S. Silver, Kings County Surrogate, was general chairman of the protest rally. Leaders of Catholic and Protestant groups attended the demonstration, inaugurated by the Brooklyn Jewish Community Council, whose president is Abraham M. Lindenbaum.
In Long Island, more than 25 organizations took part in a rally in Salisbury Park in East Meadow. Rabbi Herbert Rose, of Temple Or Elohim, Jericho, is chairman of the Long Island Committee for Soviet Jewry. At the demonstration, Rabbi George Lieberman, of Central Synagogue, Rockville Centre, who returned recently from an inspection trip in the Soviet Union, addressed the rally.
