Special correspondents of Danish newspapers permitted to visit Warsaw reported today that thousands of Poles and Jews were living without shelter in cold weather and that many thousands were literally starving. “The condition of the inhabitants is heart-breaking,” Said the neutral correspondents after their tour of the ruined former Polish capital.
Contrary to reports from Bucharest that the prominent Warsaw Jewish philanthropist and banker, Raphael Szereszewski, had escaped into Rumania, it was learned here today that it was his brother, Michael, who reached Rumania, while Raphael has fallen into the hands of the Soviet forces of occupation in Brest-Litovsk.
The Federation of Polish Jews in France, which is accepting inquiries regarding relatives in Poland, announced that within a week it had dispatched more than 4,000 inquiry cards from Paris to the International Red Cross in Geneva to seek relatives in Poland.
