Thousands of additional Palestinians will be enabled to join the British army, for combat and garrison duty, as a result of an easing of the enlistment requirements for the Buffs, British regiment stationed here to which 2,500 Palestine Jews are already attached, it was announced here today.
Under the new requirements the age limits for the Buffs have been raised from thirty-five to forty-five, thus permitting many ex-servicemen to join, as well as policemen. Those under thirty-five who have been previously rejected as medically unfit will be accepted for garrison duty with Palestine guard companies.
The military authorities hope that this relaxation of the requirements will relieve younger men for active combat duty and at the same time double the number of companies in the Buffs.
All township services except water supply in the cities of Tel Aviv and Petach Tikvah and in seventeen settlements were suspended today by a strike of the municipal employees against the Palestine Government’s ruling that municipalities and local councils should no longer pay the living costs and expenses of these employees.
