Thousands of German extremists marched to commemorate the death of Hitler deputy Rudolf Hess. In one of the largest demonstrations, in the Bavarian town of Wunsiedel, 500 counterdemonstrators turned out in protest. Thirty-four people in Wunsiedel were detained for weapons offenses and posters displaying banned symbols, but no violence was reported.
