Thousands of Jews in Hungary are impatiently awaiting an opportunity to proceed to Palestine, it was reported here today from Budapest following the establishment of a Palestine Office there last week.
The report says that the Palestine Office is being flooded with applications from Jews desiring to emigrate. The office is headed by Dr. M. Nathan, prominent Hungarian Zionist leader, and is operating with the permission of the Soviet military authorities. While registration for Jews anxious to go to Palestine is being conducted by the Palestine Office, it is difficult to predict whether, or when, those registered will be permitted to emigrate.
In additon to those desiring to go to Palestine, there are also thousands of Jews who wish to remain in Hungary. It is estimated that about 50,000 Hungarian Jews have already returned to Budapest from concentration camps in Germany and in Poland. All of them are in great need of relief and are hoping for aid from the Joint Distribution Committee, the report said.
