Thousands of Jewish servicemen in the United States armed forces throughout the world will be detached from active service this weekend to assemble for the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services.
The National Jewish Welfare Board, Government-authorized agency for serving the religious and morale needs of Jewish military personnel, announced today that 350 full and part-time chaplains will hold services during the Holy Days for the servicemen.
Servicemen at posts in Korea will be flown in to Seoul for the New Year services. An airlift in Alaska will ferry men from outlying points like Adak and Pt. Barrow to Fairbands and Anchorage. Religious services will also be held in Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland, Labrador, the Azores, Bermuda, Hawaii, Japan, Okinawa, the Philippines, Germany, France, Italy, North Africa, Britain, the Caribbean area and at posts throughout the United States.
Services will be held on all ships of the U.S. Mediterranean fleet. Religious supplies have been provided for Jewish crewmen aboard all United States naval vessels.
Services will be conducted at 170 veterans hospitals in the United States. Twenty USO-JWB workers and 265 local JWB Armed Services Committees have arranged extensive programs for the service men in their areas.
