Several thousand Jewish textile workers are among the 60,000 workers who were given notice by their employers here.
Seventy per cent of the textile manufacturers resorted to this means of relieving the situation. It was declared that the large plants are preparing to reduce production to a three-day week, while the smaller plants will operate at most on a two-day basis and some will close down entirely. The crisis, it is declared, is due to the manufacturers’ inability to dispose of their production in the internal market while the export abroad has also decreased.
The executive committee of the textile workers’ union adopted a resolution today protesting against the reduction and asked the government to intervene.
