A three-day national convention of the Jewish medical fraternity, Phi Lambda Kappa, will open here tomorrow at the Somerset Hotel to discuss problems concerning Jewish physicians.
The convention will also review plans for sponsoring scholarships for the Hebrew University medical school. A scholarship fund guaranteeing not less than $6,000 yearly for four medical students at the Hebrew University has been arranged for by Arthur Winarick, of Kiamesha Lake, N.Y. Students, by virtue of their high moral character, scholarship and service to the cause of Israel, will receive tuition and full maintenance during their studies, under terms of the scholarship.
A gold medal award to the outstanding Jewish physician for 1949 will be made at the convention. This is known as the Phi Lambda Kappa Grand Scientific Award and usually is conferred on a physician of national or international renown for the merit of his contributions. The award is not limited to members of the fraternity. The name of this year’s recipient of the award will be announced at a banquet concluding the convention sessions.
The convention will bestow honorary membership on Dr. Sidney Farber, professor of pediatrics at Harvard and chairman of the Child Cancer Research Foundation. Last year he was the recipient of the Grand Scientific Jewlled Gold Medal Award for his most unusual outstanding work on Child Cancer.
