Three University of Minnesota fraternities have been removed from the university bias clause list after removing “white Christian” membership restrictions, a university official reported today.
Dr. Donald Zander, Student Activities Bureau director, also reported that Phi Delta Theta had been placed on the list and Sigma Nu, which is on the list, had been threatened with disestablishment here if its discriminatory clause was not erased by Jan. 1.
Dr. Zander said that while Phi Delta Theta does not have a written bias clause, the national fraternity has a discriminatory practice. This was a reference to an incident at Lake Forest College in Illinois where the national headquarters forced the local chapter to depledge a member who was a Jew. The three fraternities removed from the bias clause list are Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Theta Phi and Sigma Chi.
