Israel’s three largest banks, led by Bank Leumi le-Israel, “recorded an amazing gain of 40.05% during 1961, with combined deposits of the equivalent of 925.6 million,” the American Banker disclosed in its International Banking issue, published this week.
The publication’s annual listing of the 500 largest banks in the free world showed the Bank Leumi le-Israel in 139th place. Two other Israel banks, Israel Discount Bank and Bank Hapoalim, ranked 384th and 385th respectively. The consolidated assets of Bank Leumi, including its New York branch, its offices and subsidiaries in Israel, London and Zurich, exceed 1.2 billion Israel pounds. Bank Leumi now ranks as the largest bank in the Middle East.
