Three Jewish prisoners were denied a request to receive a strictly vegan diet. U.S. District Court Judge Shira Scheindlin in New York denied a request by the Rikers Island inmates, who demanded the state serve them vegan meals because consuming animal products violates their belief that Judaism prohibits cruelty to animals, The Associated Press reported.
