Three Jews lost their lives in a disaster which has taken a toll of at least 47 lives when the passenger liner, the Fairfax, collided with the oil tanker, Pinthis, off the New England coast. The crash was the scene of a tragedy in which a young Jewish mother and her 14-months old son lost their lives.

Mrs. Ida Berkowitz of Roxbury, Mass., the 22-year old mother who dashed through the flaming corridors to save her 14-months old son, M. Robert Berkowitz, who was sleeping peacefully in their cabin, died on her way to the hospital, the baby dying a few hours later.

A. Friedman, a Jewish steward on the tanker Pinthis is believed to have died with the rest of the crew.
