Saul Hayes, executive vice-president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, has called for an immediate stepped-up program reaffirming Canadian Jewry’s fidelity to Jewishness and Jewish ideals. He listed three priorities for Canadian Jewry: full commitment to the State of Israel, concern for “the impending doom of Jews in the Soviet Union and those in Arab lands” and a solid commitment to Canada.
The CJC, he said has a difficult role in its “attempt to lead the community as well as to give direction to known community demands. To the conservatives it is too much the messenger of the masses; to the radical it is too much the servant of the establishment; to the humanist it is too much the Jewish projection.” Hayes deplored the existence of “radical Jewish groups on-and-off campus” and the “considerable segment of the population which is only nominally Jewish by observing few of those life styles or habits which we can accept as Jewish.”
