Three separate celebrations of Israel’s 18th Independence Day took place here. One was held in the main auditorium of the University of Chile, where the principal speakers were Prof. Humberto Alvarez, president of the Chilean-Israeli Cultural Institute, and Guillermo Atias, president of the Chilean Writers Society. As part of the ceremonies at the university, a scholarship was awarded to a prominent Chilean writer, Braulio Arenas.
Under the auspices of the Zionist Federation of Chile, another celebration was conducted by the Zionist Action Committee and the local section of the World Jewish Congress. Addresses were delivered by Rodolfo Borzutsky, president of the Federation, and Itzhak Korn, representing the WJC. Dr. Uri Naor, Israel’s Ambassador here, held a formal reception at the Embassy. Many Jewish and non-Jewish leaders attended that celebration.
