The Council of Ministers of the European Economic Community decided today to continue for a year the tariff concessions accorded to Israel under a three-year agreement with the European Common Market which expires Saturday.
The Council made the unilateral decision after Israel decided not to pick up its one-year extension option in the pact, underlining its dissatisfaction with the limited usefulness of the current agreement and its need for a wider solution to the problem of trade ties to Euromart. Israel filed some time ago a request for associate status with EEC.
The executive commission of the Council, the policy making body for the EEC, previously recommended associate status for Israel. The Council, at its meeting today, left action on that application for a later date.
