Foreign Secretary Arthur Henderson made good use of his visit to Geneva in persuading the Council of the League of Nations to agree to the appointment of a commission to decide the respective rights and claims of Jews and Moslems with regard to the Wailing Wall, says the “Times” today in an editorial commenting on the Council’s work.
“The reluctance of the Council was doubtless due to the knowledge that some members of the Mandates Commission belonging to Catholic states indicated on a previous occasion that there would be objection to an inquiry including the scope and status of the Holy Places.
“Henderson was able to show that the immediate purpose was strictly limited to a determination of the rights of Jews and Moslems at the Wailing Wall. The present investigation in no wise prejudges the questions relating to the Holy Places in Palestine which might arise in the future. It is satisfactory that an impartial inquiry will not at length be made. Had it been carried out sooner most of the deplorable events might never have occurred.”
