The last houses remaining on the south side of the Judenhof, near the Berlin Town Hall, have been purchased by the City of Berlin, the “Berliner Tageblan” states, for the purpose of creating modern business houses on the site.
The Judenhoi was the ghetto of medieval Berlin. Like all ghettos, it was enclosed by a wall on which the backs of the houses abutted, and at night it was shut off by heavy iron gates. The ghetto lost its real purpose when the Jews were expelled from Berlin in 1573. When they were readmitted, they were allowed to live in any part of the city they wished.
