Commissioner of Immigration Husband is preparing a report for the Budget Bureau of the Government, recommending the expenditure of a million and a half dollars for extensive improvements at Ellis Island. The present recommendations are being pushed largely as a result of recent criticisms, including that of Ambassador Geddes, of conditions at the immigration port.
According to a statement to the J. T. A. correspondent by Commissioner Husband, most of the appropriations will be expended to improve the quarters for detained immigrants, which present the greatest need. These quarters will be made more commodious and comfortable; light for the present dark rooms will be provided, stair climbing will be largely eliminated, the dormitories will be greatly improved, and thorough ventilation installed.
