The raising of an emergency fund of $50,000 to help the 65,000 Jews facing hunger in Lithuania as a result of the crop failure this year, was decided upon at a conference called by the Federation of American Jews of Lithuanian Descent, held Sunday, under the chairmanship of Henry Hurwitz, president, at the Hias Building, New York. Representatives of twenty Jewish societies participated in the conference, at which an initial sum of $2,000 was raised.
Representatives of the various societies undertook to secure contributions from their societies. An appeal will be sent to individuals throughout the country for immediate aid, it was decided.
A central committee to take charge of relief is being organized in Kovno with local committees in all the communities of Lithuania. the conference heard.
Dr. Mordecai Katz. Rabbi M. Z. Margolies, Rabbi Joseph Kanneman of Ponevezs. Ephraim Kaplan, Herman Winter and Rabbi L. Predmesky. addressed the conference. Levi Rokeach was elected treasurer of the relief fund.
