The grave of Levi Isaac Berditchiver, one of the outstanding leaders of the Chassidic movement, whose memory has been perpetuated in many stories and anecdotes depicting him as the champion of the common people, will be spared in the present program of digging up the ancient Jewish cemetery in Berditchev, it is reported here.
Orthodox Jews were greatly aroused when the digging up of the cemetery was started several weeks ago, principally because of the sanctity ascribed to the grave of Rabbi Levi Isaac. It is stated now that the Jewish section of the Communist party, in Berditchev has consented to make a concession to the protesting Orthodox and to spare the grave of the popular Chassidic rabbi. The Jewish communists have, however, refused to spare the graves of other Chassidic Zadikim buried in the same cemetery.
