Sir:
I have read with amazement Rabbi Joseph Silverman’s letter which appeared in the Daily Bulletin of December 17th. If ‘Rabbi’ Katz, who has been arrested on the charge of illegally selling sacramental wine, will be proved guilty of that crime, I hope full punishment will be meted out to him.
As an orthodox Jew and in the name of Orthodoxy, I wish to denounce such HILLUL HASHEM in unmistakeable terms.
At the same time, however, I like to state no less emphatically, that Rabbi Silverman and any other Rabbi who has abrogated Jewish law in his communal and private activity have thereby rendered themselves unfit to pronounce any opinion on what is or what is not Jewish law. On ground of logic, modesty and fairness, judgment of reformed Jews on any aspect of Jewish law which they have forsaken ought to be conspicuous by its absence.
Sincerely yours.
RABBI LEO JUNG.
