I have been interested and gratified to notice in the “Jewish Daily Bulletin”, a reference to a lecture that gave, in an attempt to promote good feeling between Jews and Geetiles.
I regret, however, a little slip that may, perhaps, to you seem insignificant. I did not say “£50,000 Knights of Columbus will spring to their deience.” I did say, “I hope that the 19,000,000 Catholics in the United States would leap to their defence”. There is a difference. The enemy, your enemy and ours, the Klan, and sympathizers with the Klan will persist in looking upon the Knights of Columbus as a military organization. That idea, of course, is absurd, but in view of the fact that they pounce upon any statements that may seem to admit that. I regret, even the possible suggestion that we mean martial violence.
Very truly yours,
JAMES M. GILLIS.
SPECIAL OBSERVATIONS
The Commission hopes it will in future receive fuller in formation of the administration of Transjordania, for although not all the Articles of the Palestine Mandate are applicable to Transjordania it is nevertheless under British Mandate, and the Mandatory should therefore make an annual report on its administration. The Commission would be glad to have fuller information in the next report regarding immigration and emigration, and the classification of immigrants according to race and occupation with detailed particulars of their place of origin. The Commission is grateful for the declaration of the British Representative that in the next report the composition of the Administrative Staff will be classified according to their duties and race. The Commission hopes that the next report will provide more detailed information of the composition and duties of the various military forces in Palestine and their racial composition. The Commission noted with satisfaction the accredited Representative’s declarations that he is prepared to consider the possibility of drafting a Labor Code applicable to Palestine. It hopes that the next report will give more derailed particulars of the proposed of actual operation of a system of labor legislation, and particularly of the International Labor Conventions applicable to Palestine.
The Commission hopes that the next report will provide fuller information regarding the budget estimates and the administrative accounts of Palestine. It particularly desires to have such information in a form in which it will be possible to compare the estimates and the results of the different financial periods. The Commission would be grateful if the Administration would provide it with information regarding the financial administration of Waki and Wakout property (Moslem religious endowments).
