Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir prevented a faux pas here over the weekend from escalating into a political disaster between Israel and Spain, which established full diplomatic relations only three years ago.

The incident occurred in the Parador, the elegant state-run guest house overlooking the ancient part of this town, which is known for its rich Jewish heritage.

There the visiting Israeli premier was served a breakfast of bacon and eggs, which he firmly but politely declined.

Shamir’s hosts apologized profusely for the inadvertent serving of the non-kosher dish. They explained that the chef was not aware of the Jewish dictary laws.

Shamir arrived here by helicopter from Madrid, where he had meetings last week with Spanish government leaders.
