Police here announced today the arrest of Robert Jan Verbelen, 51, wartime deputy to the Nazi leader in Belgium, Leon Degrelle. The charge is suspicion of having committed war crimes during the Nazi occupation of Belgium.”
Verbelen, under death sentence in Belgium, where he had been tried in absentia for war crimes, has been living here under his own name since 1945, and acquired Austrian citizenship in 1959. During the war, when he held the rank of SS General, he was in charge of Nazi security services in Belgium.
