Torah Umesorah, the national society for Hebrew Day Schools, announced yesterday that it was embarking on an ambitious five-year program that calls for the opening of 50 new elementary and 20 regional Hebrew high schools. The society also hopes to increase Hebrew day school enrollment from the present 80,000 to 110,000.
The program was outlined by Samuel C. Feuerstein, national president of Torah Umesorah, at the society’s 26th annual dinner. Mr. Feuerstein said “there are currently 362 day schools in the United States and 43 more in Canada, but there are still 25 communities with a Jewish population of 5,000-15,000 which do not have Hebrew Day Schools, and it is these communities which are our target areas for the next five years.”
