Thousands of printed leaflets bearing a bitter attack on the Jews were distributed throughout this city in the early hours of the day. Copies were found in hundreds of cars parked in the downtown district. All bore the printed signature of the Friends of New Germany, Hitlerist organization active now in the United States.
The leaflets exhorted Gentiles to “awaken” to the menace of the Jews in their midst and denounced Sir John Simon, British secretary of state for foreign affairs, and Joseph Paul-Boncour, French minister of foreign affairs, as being Jewish.
An immediate investigation was ordered by Mayor Stewart, who was instrumental last summer in disbanding the swastika clubs which had flourished here and had been involved in numerous anti-Jewish riots. At Mayor Stewart’s instance, display of the swastika in this city was banned.
It was established that the leaflets were printed in the United States and brought by automobile to Toronto.
