The Toronto Kehillah, charged with misappropriation of funds and misconduct, was completely vindicated and the charges dismissed in the report submitted to the City Council yesterday by Judge John Tyler.
Judge Tyler also vests in the Kehillah full authority for the regulation of the Kosher meat supply.
Judge Tyler’s report says in part: “If there is a community formed, such as the Kehillah, there can be no shochet not appointed by it and no rabbis not in the Rabbinical council can in any way act or direct in that community the slaughtering and koshering of meat.
“The fixing of price for Kosher meat should be vested in the Kehillah and all butchers who sell meat either whole-sail or retail require to have a shocked appointed by the Cedilla and belonging to the Rabbinical Council. Any Rabbi outside of the Rabbinical Council or any shochet not appointed by such council, should not slaughter and kosher meat.”
The decision of Judge Tyler puts an end to a controversy active for more than a year between the Vaad Ha’Eer, the City Council, and the Kehillah, the former claiming the same rights in the city abbatoir as the Kehillah.
