A total of 266 Jewish students are now enrolled in Vienna universities, it was reported here today. About one-fourth of these students are preparing for careers in medicine while another fourth are non-Austrians who do not contemplate practicing in Austria.
Many of the Jewish students–particularly the medical students–have announced that they plan to emigrate from this country to Israel as soon as they complete their courses. Before the Anschluss in 1938, there were about 7,000 Jewish students in schools of higher learning in Vienna.
