Tourism increased by 17 percent in 1999 over the previous year, to nearly 2.25 million tourists, according to data released by the Central Bureau of Statistics. The increase broke a slump that began in 1996, following a downturn in Middle East peacemaking. Israel’s Tourism Ministry forecasts that millennium events will boost tourist visits to as high as 3 million this year.
