A new threat to public transit in Tel Aviv developed today when the Dan Bus Cooperative threatened a 24-hour suspension of service in its fight for higher fares.

The threat was made at the headquarters here of the Histadrut, Israel’s labor federation, and was followed immediately by another warning from Transport Minister Moshe Carmel that the bus firm would lose its franchise if it carried out the threat. The meeting was arranged by Aharon Becker, Histadrut secretary-general.

The Transport Minister said that he was planning alternative means of transport if the bus firm suspended service next Tuesday, when new bus fares become effective. The increase will be 14 percent. The bus company had asked for a 49 percent increase.
