Transjordan representatives on the mired Transjordan-Israel armistice commission have declined to discuss arrangements for Holy Year pilgrims to pass from Israel territory to Arab-controlled areas in Jerusalem because Transjordan will not permit such passage, Israel announced late yesterday.
It is also understood that the Transjordanians have indicated that they will prevent pilgrims from proceeding from the Old City to Jewish Jerusalem. The Arab action follows closely upon the announcement by Israel that it would do the utmost in facilitating freedom of movement for all pilgrims in Jerusalem.
(In Rome yesterday Pope Pius XII urged all Roman Catholics to undertake “a crusade of prayers” in the hope that the United Nations would arrive at a just settlement of the issue of the Holy Places in Palestine.)
