The Transjordian Constitution is being drawn up at the Colonial Office in London, according to “El Carmel,” Arab paper. The constitution will include nothing new, apart from the establishment of a dynasty in the territory, of which the Emir Abdullah will be the founder, the paper states. A Council, resembling the district councils of Turkish times, is to be formed, and Hassan Khaled Pasha’s new government will be announced.
“The Council of Ministers” will be abolished and replaced by an Executive Council. Each Department will have a British adviser.
The new government is composed of Premier and Minister of the Interior, Hassan Khaled Pasha Abu-Alhuda; the Judicial Advisor, C. R. Seton, M.C.; Chief Justice, Hushem Al-Din Jarallah; the Chief Secretary, Aref Al Aref, the Financial Advisor, A. L. Kirkbride; two Arab Directors of Public Works and Antiquities respectively.
“El Carmel” also publishes a letter from Transjordania stating that the Ordinance promulgated by Al-Rikabi, the former premier, allowing foreign companies to acquire real estate properties in the Transjordanian territory, aims at facilitating the colonization of Transjordania by Jewish companies. The writer recalls Dr. Weizmann’s statement in Palestine.
In an editorial note, the paper urges the Arabs of Transjordania to appeal to the Government and the British Representative for the convocation of a Constituent Assembly to draw up a Constitution providing for the establishment of a national government and safeguarding the rights of the inhabitants in accordance with the Somerset agreement which recognizes the autonomy of the country under British protection.
