A Black Locust tree flown here yesterday from Israel was planted in Central Park this afternoon in ceremonies attended by city officials and members of the Israeli Consulate staff. The tree was a gift from the people of Israel to the people of the United States.
Israel Consul Ram Haviv, in making the presentation of the tree to August Heckscher, N.Y. City Parks Department director of horticulture, said the gift was “in grateful acknowledgement of the help given by Americans over the past 19 years in helping Israel’s people live in peace, freedom and human dignity.” Tree planting is a traditional activity in Israel on Lag B’Omer, which occurs on Sunday, when a massive Salute to Israel parade will be held here.
