A witness testifying here at the trial of Franz Rademacher, former Nazi official charged with responsibility in the deportation and death of tens of thousands of Jews from several Central European countries, today said that some 6,000 Jewish women and children were slaughtered in “gas trucks” in Belgrade in 1942. The witness added that all Jewish males who could be rounded up in the city, were shot.
The witness, a former German police colonel, said that at the time of the executions he thought the Jews were being murdered as part of the general program of exterminating Jews. Later, he learned that the Jewish males who were shot had been held as hostages.
