The trial of Zelea Codreanu, anti-Semitic leader charged with instigating riots, will take place this week in this city it was announced. The speediness with which the anti-Jewish leader is being brought to trial indicates the seriousness with which the ministry of justice is now regarding anti-Semitism, in contrast with its previous attitude which many regarded as conscious lenience toward anti-Semitic leaders. The usual policy was to arrest anti-Semitic leaders and release them a few days later, postponing their trials until everything was forgotten and then releasing them without punishment.
Even Vayda Voevod emphasized this policy when, talking to Victor Aberson, member of the Jewish investigation committee, he stated that the ministry of the interior was arresting the anti-Semites but the ministry of justice lacked firmness in handling the cases.
Another step indicating the new frame of mind of ministry of justice is shown in the appointment of attorney general Alexandru to conduct an investigation in Kimpolung, Bukowina. Jews of that section had complained that the regional officials are prejudiced.
Meanwhile the “Curierul Israelite,” organ of the Union of Roumanian Jews, severely attacks the government for not punishing its state officials who have been proven guilty of conducting anti-Semitic agitation.
