Fritz Forberg, a former Nazi police officer, has gone on trial in Regensburg accused of murdering 1500 Jews near Berditshev and Winniza in the Soviet Union in the autumn of 1941. Within 48 hours, the entire 34,000 Jewish population of Kiev was herded into a narrow gully and machine-gunned. Forberg, the court said, was only one link in the chain of command during the operation. Forberg’s regimental commander at the time now lives in Ulm, drawing a pension from the State. He cannot be put on trial because of poor health.
