Egypt, Syria, and Iraq today formally pledged that the new United Arab Republic will “liberate” Palestine. The communique issued in Cairo proclaiming this as one of their goals was signed by President Gamal Abdel Nasser and 30 others from the three countries after 10 days of negotiation.
The three Arab countries approved the formation of the new federated United Arab Republic by signing agreements for its constitution and national charter. The declaration announcing the signing said the merger of the three states was aimed at combating “Zionism and imperialism. ” The new federation will be voted on by citizens of all three countries in a plebiscite within five months.
